Gamblin Cold Wax medium increases thickness and reduces gloss.

Gamblin Cold Wax Medium is a thick, white painting medium with the buttery consistency of wet wax. The medium is made from naturally white beeswax combined with Gamblins odourless mineral spirit, Gamsol. It can be further thinned with Gamsol or combined with Galkyd medium for greater paint flexibility.

The cold wax medium mixes nicely with oil paint, giving it a full, thick texture while only affecting the colour with a certain softness. The fullness of the paint allows for expressive impasto work. The surface of the dried paint will reach the consistency of a wax candle so if youre using more than 1/3 medium to 2/3 paint, rigid supports are recommended to avoid cracking.

The medium also has the unique property of increasing the matte quality of paint. Mixing the cold wax medium (up to 1/4) into another Gamblin oil painting medium like Galkyd makes it act like a matting agent, reducing natural glossy effects. To mix with fluid mediums, thin the cold wax medium with Gamsol/odourless white spirits until it becomes a wet paste and combine thoroughly. For thicker mediums, simply blend it in with a palette knife. It can also be brushed onto a dried painting as a waxy varnish.
